Trilobites were a phenomenally successful group of oceanic arthropods which first appeared in the beginning of the Cambrian age. These creatures showed remarkable diversity for such early arthropods, with over 20,000 known species. The last trilobite species vanished in a mass-extinction event about 250 million years ago.

According to The Pretentious History of Everything, the meta-sapien race cultivated genetically engineered arthropods in abundance. Among them were trilobite-like creatures whose exoskeletons were comprised of a sturdy, lightweight, and flexible alloy formed through a biomineralization process. These armored plates were harvested and used in a variety of applications, especially during WWIII.
